So, what's the deal with all of these Internet shopping sites anyway?
Some Internet shopping sites started as outgrowths from computer hardware
oriented sites. Two notable examples of these are Got|Apex and AnandTech.
Other sites were started as labors of love to provide information to like
minded members of the Internet community. Others were started from the
outset as business ventures.
The primary mechanisms that sites use to generate revenue are advertisements
displayed (impressions), clicks, leads, and sales.
Some very high volume sites can generate revenue simply by displaying advertisements. These are most commonly in the form of banner adds or pop (under or over) ads. Some advertisers will pay for any clicks (or click-throughs) from the operator's site to their site. This is especially popular right now with gambling and adult oriented target sites. The most common form of revenue generation is for referrals that provide the advertiser with sales leads, or actual sales. Sales leads are usually compensated through a fixed amount per lead. Sales are either compensated through a fixed amount per sale (or sign-up), or most commonly through a commission based on a percentage of the completed sale.
Thus, most sites hope that you will use their vendor links to go to your
desired destination, as this a significant source of their revenue.
We started this site because we really got into getting good deals. It
is really fun to be able to get an item for free or at an incredible discount
by utilizing intelligent vendor selection, coupons, and rebates. To us,
a logical outgrowth of this interest was to combine our interest in computers
and the Internet, with our love of getting great deals. Thus was Dealdom
born. Dealdom really is at its heart a hobbyist site and a labor of love.
We do participate in affiliate referral links, though we do not expect
that our site will ever generate any significant revenue, or probably even
break even. We do not believe in pop (under/over) ads as we find them obnoxious,
nor do we provide advertising support for gambling or adult oriented sites
as these types of sites do not align with the desire to keep this site
"family oriented."
If we do provide a deal that is of interest to you, or a vendor link to
a site that you are planning to purchase from anyway, we do appreciate
your using our links. Not only does it help defray the cost of maintaining
the site, but, quite honestly, it adds another dimension to the excitement
we get out from our primary interests.
